USA:
When traveling to/from and via the USA, special rules apply. Below is important information for you as a passenger.
If you are traveling to the US, you must have a machine-readable passport that is valid for the duration of your stay in the US.
If you are a Swedish citizen or in a country belonging to the "Visa Waiver Program Countries", you do not need a visa to travel to the USA, but you must apply for an entry permit via ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) no later than 72 hours before departure. (read more below).
If you do not have a machine-readable passport or if your planned stay will exceed 90 days, you must obtain a US visa before departure.
It is important that your name is spelled the same in your airline ticket as in your passport.
From March 31, 2016, your passport will be subject to more stringent requirements. Passports containing your biometric features will be required. It is possible that you already have the right kind. Check the front of the cover! There should be a small symbol at the bottom left. Most passports issued to Nordic citizens have the correct design. And if you are going to the USA, the old type of passport will not be accepted for e.g. ESTA registration. A new passport means that you must update your ESTA file or make a new registration.
It is the responsibility of the traveler to have registered and obtained an entry permit. An approved ESTA is valid for 2 years and for multiple entries to the USA. If you renew your passport, a new ESTA application must be made. A fee of $21 is charged per application.

Canada:
As of 15 March 2016, Swedish citizens need to carry an electronic travel document, a so-called eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for entry by air to Canada. An ETA is also required for transit. However, if you enter Canada by sea or land, no ETA is required. The application costs 7 Canadian dollars, which corresponds to about 45 Swedish kronor. The application can be made via this link. Payment is made in connection with the application by credit card. When the eTA is granted, the data are linked to those in the passport and are thus valid until the passport is replaced.
